The proposal was one for the history books, but all the little details of the wedding process are starting to grate on your nerves. How can you tell that you might be just a tad stressed out over all this wedding planning stuff? One clue was when you tried to brush your hair with your toothbrush. At least it had the “brush” part in the name, which counts for something. Right?
Research reveals that getting hitched for the long haul lends married couples positive health outcomes related to mental and physical health, but you have to get through the process to enjoy the honeymoon, all the benefits, and future years together.
If you’re currently in the midst of wedding-planning craziness, here’s the good news: it’s possible to pull off a dream wedding without going insane. Before you fall down a Pinterest wormhole for days at a time, here’s a few tips on how to stay healthy, happy and sane during your wedding planning process.
1. Sign-Up for a Course in Marriage Prep
This piece of advice is first for a simple reason: we all need a little guidance to lessen the burden of stress when undertaking something we’ve never done before. Obviously you want to do your best to give yourself the dream wedding you deserve.
A marriage prep course could be the that ‘owner’s manual’ that is missing from your toolkit. Courses should be taken together with your new partner so that you can learn things like how to present a united front as newlyweds, especially when the family dynamics of dealing with in-laws come into play.
Most courses focus on similar topics:
- Appreciating your differences
- Recognizing your strengths
- Family planning
- Discussing what you want for the future as individuals and partners
- Or, even talking about the wedding itself
Many churches of various denominations offer marriage preparation courses, or you can ask your spiritual counselor, pastor, priest or shaman for assistance in customizing a course for you as a couple. A therapist may also prove helpful, along with books found at your local bookstore or online. If you find an online course interesting, always vet the person leading it through their testimonials and feedback on other sites. Don’t be afraid to ask for references.
2. Focus on the Health of Body and Mind
It’s easy to forget basic self-care and health practices as you slip into the daily stress of all the details that wedding planning involves. That’s why it’s so vital to develop positive, healthy routines and stick with them.
What practices do you have in place to nourish your body and mind? Stay on track to fit into your dream dress and shake your groove thing on the dance floor!
- Why not start your day with breathing exercises or by taking a short walk as a form of meditation — even if that’s walking ten paces in place for ten minutes in your garden. Focus on your breath and movements with intention to reduce stress levels.
- Break big meals into smaller meals of five, so that you feel full without risking emotional overeating.
- Join a dance class with your partner to learn the trust that goes into leading and following in dance while making sure you do your first dance as a married couple in style.
- Order weekly lunches and dinners in the form of meal kits to keep eating healthily and consistently.
- Invest in a gym membership, personal trainer, or nutritionist to keep your body and mind in tip-top shape.
3. Disengage from Stress While Engaged
Remember to engage in regular breathing exercises, and that sometimes it’s okay to punch a pillow. If you decide to invest in those dance classes, put your physical and mental energy into the strides you make as a couple. Every little step, whether in dance or the planning process, gets you somewhere.
Hire a Wedding Planner
You might need to enlist the help of a professional if you’re throwing a truly over-the-top soiree. Look into a wedding planner to navigate the ins and outs of your impending nuptials is simply impossible to do on your own or with some help from your friends and family. A wedding planner will likely know the venues and vendors in the area, as well as the questions to ask them in order to ensure you find the perfect fit. They’ll also take any and all problems off your plate on the actual wedding day, so you can just enjoy.
Experienced planners have been through every single wedding circus and juggling situation you could imagine. Plus, already established connections come in handy and coule end up saving you time and money. Aside from the connections, a wedding planner helps you plan your budget and schedule too. Wedding planners don’t put up with price gauging, can negotiate prices, and know the right value for what you want. They will pursue your dream wedding with all their available time and resources.
4. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
When you’re dealing with multiple vendors and potentially hundreds of wedding guests, something will inevitably go wrong.
- Maybe there will be a miscommunication with the photographer’s location at a certain time
- Perhaps one of your bridesmaid’s zippers will break
- Maybe your veil won’t lay just right
No matter what it is, try to keep things in perspective and don’t sweat the small stuff! Chances are you’ll barely remember one or two small snafus on your wedding day. This is about you and your significant other, not the minor mishaps.
5. Call in Reinforcements
If you’re getting to the end of your wedding-planning journey, this means you’re at the point where you can’t put off the small details anymore. You have to make final decisions regarding the flowers, figure out the seating arrangements once and for all and make the grueling choice about your cake flavor.
Ask your bridesmaids or other members of your wedding party to help where possible. They might not be able to perform every task on your to-do list, but chances are they can help out with some of the smaller details.
There is power in radical self-honesty and caring less. Know when you reach your limit and step away. Get outside help. Vent to friends over coffee and help a stranger when you need to do something outside of yourself and your life. Write about the process in an engagement journal, and don’t censor yourself. Giving to others is immensely rewarding. Besides, your future partner in life will be there to offer great big hugs, and that’s the best remedy of all.
It’s easy to drive off into wedding planning madness before the tin cans are tied on the bumper, and “Congratulations” written on the back window. Focus on the health of your body and mind, know your limits and ask for help when you need it — whether that’s taking a marriage prep course, getting a personal trainer, or hiring a wedding planner.
You deserve the best wedding but not at the price of your health and happiness. Remember to breathe and occasionally dance in the rain for radical and wild self-care, because you’re getting hitched to the best person ever — your new spouse!
