Men’s Wallet Buyer’s Guide- How to Choose Your Next Favorite
What are your needs? What’s your personal style? Do you spend most of your time in a suit? Rock climbing? (Or rock climbing in a suit?!)
These are all questions to ask yourself when choosing your “until-the-wheels-fall-off” wallet. Let’s take a quick walk through what features a good wallet should have and what’s available on the market now.
Which men’s wallet is right for you?
Here are a few key things to consider and some features to look for.
Size
The function of a wallet often dictates its size. For instance, a breast pocket wallet is often longer and slimmer than a standard wallet—very James Bond.
If you’re looking for something more minimal, a cardholder that doesn’t fold and features just a couple of slots for cards, or a money clip (if you prefer to carry cash), does the job without the extra frills.
Somewhere in-between falls the bifold/trifold wallet. Bifolds are often minimalist wallets, with a few credit card slots and an ID window.
Trifold wallets can be bulkier, but that largely depends upon what you put in it! Some billfold wallets feature coin pockets with either zippers or button closures that may create some bulk but are quite useful if you carry cash.
Finally, metallic clamshell wallets run the gamut when it comes to size. Many provide plenty of room but stay compact enough to slip easily into any pocket. Some are heftier and are designed to carry more stuff. (Some even feature a built-in phone charger!)
Style
If you’re a classic kind of guy, a simple soft leather bifold with a couple of slots on each side will probably suffice as long as it fits comfortably in your pocket. If you’re don’t stash your wallet in your pockets, a trifold or a clamshell wallet carries all the essentials and more.
If you’re the kind of guy who likes to stay prepared, a wallet that offers hidden pockets or has more space might be better for storing more daytime carryables.
If you wear a suit regularly, think about keeping around another slimmer wallet specifically to fit inside the jacket pocket. Often, the same wallet you’d regularly tote around in your back pocket will prove too bulky for trouser pockets.
Regardless of the type of wallet you choose, sticking with classic colors and a design that’ll stay in fashion is always a good idea.
Material
Leather is the most common, but great wallets made of alternative materials are popping up everywhere. Even exotic hides like ostrich and alligator are finding their way into the mix.
There are plenty of beautiful canvas options for those who prefer to go animal-free, and wallets made from metals like carbon fiber keep it slim and organized, too.
Many wallets include a thin RFID blocker sewn inside the wallet’s materials to prevent RFID skimming from credit and debit cards. The frequency of RFID theft is a source of debate among those in the security world, but the RFID blocker doesn’t interfere with the wallet’s aesthetic and functionality, so why not err on the safe side?
Craftsmanship
If you’re purchasing a leather wallet, pay attention to how the wallet is stitched, what kind of leather it’s made from, and how it’s tanned.
If you read our guide to leather messenger bags for men, you’ll know that full-grain leather is the strongest, and its patina gets lovelier with use. However, full-grain can take time to break-in, so products with the genuine leather label may work better for a slimmer dress wallet you won’t carry all the time.
For clamshell metal wallets, pay attention to what materials it’s made from, weight, and hinge quality.
If you prefer a fabric wallet, like canvas, look at how it’s sewn and how sturdy the edging is. A quality wallet shouldn’t fray after a couple of months of regular use.
What do men store in their wallets these days, anyway?
What a man keeps in his wallet says as much about him as the kind of wallet he carries.
Most men opt for the bare minimum. Slots for a driver’s license, a credit card, folded bills, and perhaps a work ID or insurance card will usually suffice.
If you’re a cash-carrying kinda guy, a bill pocket and/or a coin pocket are useful for keeping everything in its place.
Some dudes (like mine) store other stuff like credit card-sized multitools in their wallets, too.
When deciding which wallet is right for you, clean out the old one and take inventory first. Get rid of everything you don’t need but have accumulated over time, like receipts, membership loyalty cards, etc.
