Rehearsal Dinner FAQs
While sending out rehearsal dinner invitations isn’t strictly necessary, it’s a good idea in certain circumstances.
For example, suppose you’re hosting a larger or more formal dinner. In that case, having a written invite can better help remind your guests when and where the event is happening and help the host keep track of RSVPs more easily.
An email or blanket social media message may work just fine for a smaller or less formal affair.
Aaah, wedding etiquette. Who you should invite to the rehearsal dinner is just one of many tricky situations you’ll navigate on the road to Weddingsville.
We think it depends in part upon the wedding guest list, the couples’ preferences, and your budget.
For example, many couples prefer to limit the rehearsal dinner attendees to those needed at the rehearsal. This may include the bride and groom’s parents, siblings, and close friends. It’s also appropriate to invite the officiant, his or her spouse (if married), and any ceremony readers. If you haven’t designated the dinner as an adults-only gathering, invite any pint-sized members of the wedding party and their parents, too.
Sometimes, limiting the guest list to those attending the rehearsal can be awkward. For instance, if you have guests traveling from afar just to come to your wedding (bearing gifts, no less!), it could be construed as a little tacky to exclude them.
But if you invite those guests, that raises the risk of potentially bruised feelings if you exclude others. See? Tricky. Also, if you’re having a destination wedding, we’ll just say upfront that you should probably invite everyone. Again, traveling guests bearing gifts.
There aren’t any hard and fast rules around inviting plus-ones, either. But, in our experience, things go much more smoothly, and everyone seems to have a better time if you extend the offer.
We have yet to hear of a completely conflict-free wedding. At the end of the day, you can’t please all the people all the time. So do the best you can with what you’ve got, and if apologies are in order, make ’em later.
As with any large-ish gathering, it’s courteous to send the invitations out with ample time to spare for RSVPs and trip planning. Usually, four weeks ahead of time is sufficient, but it’s not a crime to send them earlier.
Your rehearsal dinner invitations shouldn’t go out with the wedding invites. They’re two different events with potentially two different guest lists. Details for the rehearsal dinner probably won’t solidify until after the wedding invites are sent anyway. Hence, there’s no need to confuse things by sending them out together.
As a rule, whoever is hosting the rehearsal dinner should send them. Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is hosted by the groom’s mother as her shot at showing off her hostessing skills. (Why should the mother of the bride have all the fun, right?) But, if you ask us, that concept is a bit outdated. So unless the groom’s mom really wants to host it, it’s anyone’s opportunity, and the host should send the invites.
How to Word Rehearsal Dinner Invitations
Rehearsal dinner invitation wording can be as casual or formal as you like. It all depends on your personal style and the kind of dinner you’re hosting.
If you’re throwing a simple dinner, something like this is appropriate:
Please join us for a rehearsal dinner celebrating the union of Kelly Jones and Stephanie Jackson on Thursday, May 13, 2021, at 7 PM.
Dinner will be held at Kayne Prime Steakhouse, 1234 Gulch Ave. Nashville, TN. 37222
Please RSVP to Kim at Kimsemail.mail by April 1, 2021
If your dinner is more formal, just tweak the wording a bit like this:
Your attendance is requested at a rehearsal dinner honoring the marriage of Kelly Jones and Stephanie Jackson on Thursday, May 13, 2021, at 7 PM.
Dinner will be held at Kayne Prime Steakhouse, 1234 Gulch Ave. Nashville, TN. 37222
Please send your responses to Kim at Kimsemail.mail by April 1, 2021.
If you’re going for come-as-you-are informal, word it however you want as long as it includes the couples’ names, the date, the venue name and address, and RSVP info.
Eat, Drink, and Enjoy!
There will be as many toasts, tears, and laughter at the wedding rehearsal dinner as at the reception. But, unlike the reception, the wedding rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity for the soon-to-be newlyweds to sit back, relax, and enjoy their loved ones.
So make your reservations, send out your rehearsal dinner invites, and get ready for a good time. Cheers!
